Finding the right bull can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack. While the sheer number of bulls available to choose from within the Angus breed is one of the breed’s strengths, narrowing down options to the bull(s) to bid on can be a process.

Whether you are searching through multiple sale offerings or just wanting to sort through the bulls at one farm, using features of the Angus Sale Books page on www.angus.org can make the process easier.

Getting started

To get started, let’s go to the Angus Sale Books page online. If you search “Angus sale books,” it will likely be your first option, but the official page is https://www.angus.org/angus-media/buyers/sale-books.

On this site, click the red tabs to see a list of books by category.

By clicking the “All Books” tab, books that fall under the “Sale Books” (live auction sales), “Private Treaty” and “Angus-Influenced Commercial Females” tabs also display.

To view sale books of upcoming live auction sales, click the “Sale Books” tab and scroll down through the books. By default, they will display in date order. If you want to narrow the list down, search via Keyword, Location, Alphabetical and Start/End Date (see Fig. 1).

You can further drill down by sale books that include videos youtube, searchable expected progeny differences (EPDs), live EPDs Live EPDs, and/or a supplement supplement(see Fig. 2).

Click on your desired sale book to load it onto your screen.

There are two options for viewing books:

  • Flip Book View. Click on the gray arrows to page through a book.
  • Easy View. Use this option for sale books that are accompanied by some of the options to individually view a sale lot’s photo, pedigree, footnote and video, if loaded. Click on the red “Easy View” box in the gray navigation bar at the top of the page to access.

When you are in “Easy View” the red box in the upper right corner changes to “Flip Book View” to allow you to toggle back. Note, the “Easy View” is only available on sale books built by Angus Media.

EasyView

Features in both views

Some features are available in both views.

  • Request a sale book. You can request a sale book from the seller by clicking on this text in the upper gray bar. Once you fill out the form and hit save, your information is electronically delivered to the sale contact who fulfills your request (not the American Angus Association or Angus Media).
  • EPD Search. Click on this text in the gray banner, and a menu pops up with criteria on which to search cattle from within a sale book in an easy-to-use format (see Fig. 3). For example, filter your search by sex/type, age range and pedigree symbols such as # for Pathfinder®. Select your own maximum and minimum values for EPDs and $Values, and then choose how to order the results: highest to lowest or lowest to highest. The search can be downloaded in an excel file.
  • Videos. If videos are linked to lots, the word “Videos” blinks at the top of the page.
  • Supplement. If a supplement is linked to this sale book, the word “Supplement” blinks at the top of the page. Supplements generally include additional information that was unavailable at the time the sale book was published.

Navigating ‘Easy View’

When in Flip Book View, navigate to Easy View by clicking the maroon button on the top right-hand corner of the screen. In Easy View, there are three icons to the right of each lot:

eye— Click on the eye icon to view a lot’s individual information, including footnote, footnote ranks, photos and related videos.

star— Highlight the star icon to add a lot to your Watchlist.

share— Click on the share icon and easily share this lot and its information via email, Facebook, LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter) and WhatsApp.

  • Contact. Have a question for the seller while navigating in Easy View? Click on the blue “Contact” button on the top left to access the contact’s name, email and phone number.
  • Watchlist. To the right of the video, if you are viewing on a desktop, or just above the video if viewing on a phone, you’ll see two buttons — one for “All Videos” and one for “Watchlist.” Click the Watchlist button.
  • This feature helps you easily keep track of lots on which you wish to keep an eye. By clicking on the blue “Save/Send Watchlist” bar, this list can be saved by emailing it to yourself or even to someone else. You can select from six different choices of times to be reminded about a sale, from two weeks before to one hour before sale time. Plus, there’s plenty of space to make notes for you or others to keep track of favorite lots (see Fig. 4).

When in Easy View, navigate back to Flip Book View by clicking the maroon button on the top right-hand corner of the screen. Flip Book View also offers these tools:

The upper right on this screen view offers a button for the “Watchlist,” as well as buttons for “All Lots” and “Page Lots.”
  • Clicking on “Page Lots” pulls up the Lot numbers of the cattle displayed on the two-page view. By selecting each lot, you are able to click through pedigree, footnote, photo and video for a closer review, while having the opportunity to save and share as in Easy View.

  • Slider Bar. Use this bar found at the bottom of the screen to locate a specific page.

Bottom navigation

While in either screen view, tools in the bottom gray bar make it easy to review, shop and share information. Click on “Last Updated” to find the most recent update of live EPDs, and then download, print and easily share sale book pages or the complete file by email and other platforms. For further information about lots offered for sale, click “Contact” to reach out to the seller.
