AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION - THE BUSINESS BREED

The Angus Advantage

You could choose another breed, but the dollar signs and data will lead you to Angus.
The first Angus cattle imported to the United States were a novelty breed, quickly becoming known for their mothering ability. Today, the Angus cow is the epitome of maternal instincts and the top choice for terminal traits.

Couple its genetic strengths with the people and the programs to back the breed up, it won’t take long to see that Angus isn’t just an option, it’s the best choice for your operation.

The Genetic Advantage

Angus genetics are a critical part of any commercial operation. Angus bulls can be used in straightbreeding or cross-breeding programs to contribute to low birthweights with heavy weaning weights along with valuable maternal traits for replacement heifers. Producers can also select Angus genetics for high growth and exceptional carcass traits.

The diversity of the Angus breed means there are Angus genetics for everyone and every production environment. We have the largest membership of any beef breed organization, and that allows for choices that fit multiple environments and different breeding objectives.

The Market Advantage

You don’t need us to tell you that Angus cattle are in demand. Just pick up an auction market report and it’s clear: Angus cattle bring more money at every point along the production chain.

It all starts with consumer demand, and since 1978 the Certified Angus Beef® brand has led the way both characterizing what buyers want and delivering on that brand promise. That pull-through demand model adds value at every step in the chain.

Cattle buyers are willing to invest in Angus-sired feeder calves because they know they’ll perform.

According to the Meat Animal Research Center’s Across-Breed EPD Adjustments, Angus cattle have the second lowest birthweight of all major beef breeds, but the highest yearling weight. The breed’s average marbling score and carcass weight EPDs also top the chart.

When Angus cattle are on the feedyard show list, packer buyers pay attention. They know that cattle sired by Angus genetics are more likely to grade on the rail and qualify for premium programs like the Certified Angus Beef® brand.  Each year, packers pay millions of dollars in grid premiums for carcasses that earn the CAB stamp by meeting all 10 of the quality-based specifications.

The Information Advantage

Data isn’t worth much unless you have a way to make sense of it, a way to base informed decisions on it. Angus has more data, more tools and more communications vehicles than any other breed, and it’s available right at your fingertips.

Tools

In addition to the 24 individual expected progeny differences (EPDs) available to select for production, maternal, management and carcass traits, there are Dollar-Value ($Value) indexes to help simplify the process. Everything from maternal weaned calf value ($M) to a beef value ($B) terminal index and a combined value ($C) number help breeders with a specific objective move several traits simultaneously.

THE COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE

You belong here. Yes, you.

Cattlemen often tell us the best part of being in the breed is the people. The monetary gains are nice, the tools are helpful and the information is powerful, but it’s the people that make it worth it.
