NEXT GENERATION

An Angus Diversity

Embracing our diversity and upholding our independence can ensure a bright future for generations of Angus breeders to come.

May 1, 2024

As a fourth-generation Angus breeder, I am deeply rooted in the tradition of cultivating excellence within the Angus breed. For me, the cornerstone of establishing a resilient and prosperous herd lies in one fundamental aspect: the Angus cow. Across generations, my family and I have dedicated ourselves to the continuous improvement of herd quality, with an unwavering commitment to achieving the pinnacle of perfection embodied by the ideal Angus cow.

Each year presents us with fresh opportunities to refine and enhance our breeding program, guided by our shared vision and dedication to the breed. However, this pursuit of excellence takes on numerous forms, shaped by the unique perspectives and experiences of each individual breeder within our community. Indeed, breeder identity serves as the driving force that fuels our collective passion and propels us forward on our journey toward breed improvement.

As I travel on the bull sale circuit, engaging in conversations with fellow breeders, I am educated by the opinions and preferences that characterize our community. Discussions often revolve around preferred sires and breeding strategies. While there may be some overlap in choices, more often than not, each breeder has a unique favorite. What truly stands out is the diversity of perspectives and approaches embraced by breeders. Each breeder brings their own insights and expertise to the table, contributing to the diversity of the Angus breed.

It is in these exchanges we truly see our individual identities, recognizing that diversity is not only our strength but also the lifeline of our community. As one breeder aptly put it, “It’s the beauty of diversity that prevents us from all coveting the same bull. Just imagine the trouble we’d be in if we did!”

Our interactions with breeders from diverse backgrounds reveal a common thread that binds us together: a deep-seated passion for our shared vision of breed excellence. Despite our differences, we are united by our commitment to the breed and our relentless pursuit of improvement.

Yet, amidst this celebration of diversity, there is a shared concern that looms over our community: vertical integration. As breeders, we recognize the importance of maintaining our independence and freedom, safeguarding the integrity of our breeding programs and preserving the unique identities that define us. It is only by remaining passionate in our commitment to breed improvement, free from the constraints of external influences, that we can truly realize our collective vision for the future of the Angus breed.

As stewards of the Angus breed, we are bound together by our shared passion, our commitment to excellence and our steadfast dedication to preserving the integrity of our breeding programs. It is through embracing our diversity, celebrating our individual identities, and upholding our independence that we can ensure a bright and prosperous future for generations of Angus breeders to come.
