November 27, 2023
The American Angus Association offers opportunities for college students to further their education and gain experience with the world’s leading beef cattle association. These paid summer positions offer goal-oriented students the opportunity to build upon their writing, editing, photography, and organizational skills while developing specific and practical knowledge about the agriculture and beef industry. The internships being offered include:
Angus Genetics Inc.
A for-profit, wholly owned subsidiary of the American Angus Association, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) strives to drive the strategic vision of how genetic and genomic technology will influence decisions made by the Association’s stakeholders.
This position can be tailored to the interest of the intern, and even allow the student to include the internship project in their graduate school program. There will be research opportunities to develop and evaluate novel traits in beef cattle and the chance to find new ways to use genomic data in commercially available genetic evaluation pipelines.
Job duties include developing appropriate definitions of potential traits to evaluate in beef genomic evaluations, writing technical reports for the Genetic Evaluation Team, and estimating genetic parameters for reproductive and/or health traits in beef cattle.
Applicants should be currently enrolled in an advanced graduate-level degree in animal science, genetics, statistics or a related field. They should also have experience with a genetic evaluation software, preferably BLUPF90.
Angus Media marketing
New to the internship lineup, students have the opportunity to learn from all the teams working at Angus Media to help cattle producers reach new levels of success with their marketing campaigns.
Applicants can expect to work in email marketing, graphic design, digital advertising, social media content creation and data analytics.
The Angus Media team will provide hands-on experience in optimizing email marketing campaigns, designing graphics for various marketing materials, ensuring brand consistency, managing digital advertising campaigns on Google and Facebook Ads, creating photographs and videos, and creating reports that highlight key performance metrics.
Previous management or oversight of business social media accounts is preferred.
Angus Media publications
Writing enthusiasts will have the chance to participate in Angus Media’s publications. Bylines could be included in the Angus Journal, Angus Beef Bulletin®, AJ Daily, Angus Beef Bulletin EXTRA, editorial websites, podcasts and social media platforms.
Tailored to fit applicants’ strengths, students can expect to conduct interviews with producers and industry professionals, write various types of articles, explore the production process for two different magazines, assist in daily tasks for information outlets and manage a monthly column.
Interns will also attend two of the following events: Beef Leaders Institute, American Society of Animal Science meetings, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Summer Conference, educational meetings approved by the editorial staff, National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) and Beef Improvement Federation Symposium.
Experience in news and feature writing, editing and photography is suggested.
Communications
This position focuses on enhancing a student’s market value through real-life, hands-on experiences. Applicants should be interested in fine-tuning graphic design, writing and photography skills; and they can look forward to developing new talents through customized internship goals.
Working with the American Angus Association’s communications team, interns will delve into design, photography, videography and more as they embark on a summer devoted to tackling multifaceted agricultural communications.
From social media content to promotional material and even writing for publications, news releases and announcements, this position centers around marketing and promotional projects for all of the Association entities and departments.
Those interested are encouraged to have experience in photography, videography and social media.
Events and Junior Activities
For sophomores, juniors or seniors, this position allows interns to help with the planning and execution of junior shows and leadership events. The summer will provide both training and experience in breed association work.
Independent and team settings offer applicants the opportunity to organize, prioritize and execute multiple actives. Daily in-office preparation will be balanced with field work in the days prior to and during events such as the NJAS, NJAS contests and the Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD)conference.
Travel will be expected in this position. Preference will be given to those who have an agriculture-related major field of study.
Students who wish to apply for an internship should upload their résumé, cover letter and references to the career center at www.angus.org/careers by Dec. 1, 2023.
